Young people are predicted to spend around 25 years of their lives glued to smartphones. Gen Z members at school, college or university are now typically spending at least five-and-a-half hours a day staring into the tiny screens. A new study by tech use monitoring service Fluid Focus shows this could balloon into a shocking 25 years of their lives spent scrolling, texting and emailing on mobiles alone. The research does not account for extra time spilled into working on laptop and desktop computers. As the average UK lifespan is now just over 82 years it’s almost a third of the time they could spend on the planet. Dr Paul Redmond, who studies generational change, branded the chilling data “quite stark”. He warned about how the study also found the young want to change the amount of time they are spending on phones: “I think what’s powerful is how students feel that it’s damaging their academic performance. “That awareness that, ‘I could do so much better if I manage this’.” The boff was director of student
