Sheriff: Man entered encampment, attacked 2 unhoused victims with ‘makeshift weapons’

Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who they say entered a homeless encampment, attacked two unhoused residents with homemade weapons, and then fled after unsuccessfully stealing one of their bicycles.

Anthony Alviso, 46, of Oxnard was arrested Saturday morning after entering the homeless encampment located near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Gonzales Road just outside Oxnard city limits.

Deputies responded to the encampment and took a report from two individuals who said Alviso attacked them with “makeshift weapons,” injuring one of them, and then trying to steal one of their bicycles.

The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived, officials said.

With help from the Sheriff’s Office Homeless Liaison Unit, who possess knowledge of the area and “relationship with the local transient population,” deputies were able to search other encampments in the area and ultimately take Alviso into custody.

He now faces potential charges for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted robbery. He’s currently being held at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office as he awaits his next court date.

His bail is currently set at $105,000, the Sheriff’s Office said.
