Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke out on Monday after the country launched missile strikes on a U.S. military base in Qatar in retaliation—an escalation that further inflamed tensions across the region. Nearly 48 hours later, Khamenei posted on X, formerly Twitter, "Those who know the Iranian people and their history know that the Iranian nation isn't a nation that surrenders." The statement followed President Donald Trump's decision to bomb three of Iran's key nuclear facilities over the weekend, Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. On Monday, Iran launched 19 missiles at the sprawling, Al Udeid Air Base with one striking the facility but causing no casualties, a Qatari military official said. Officials added that the country's airspace had been secured. The New York Times reported that since Israel launched its strikes on June 13, Khamenei has been sheltering in a bunker, mostly speaks with his commanders through a trusted aide and has suspended electronic communications. Other publications also reported that Khamenei had fled into a bunker, which was referred to by Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran's last monarch, who said he had gone into hiding "like a frightened rat."
