Hot air balloon bursts into flames mid-air in Brazil, eight killed The incident occurred around 8 a.m. local time, a military firefighter at the scene stated. A fire reportedly broke out when the backup torch placed in the balloon’s basket ignited, prompting the pilot to attempt an emergency landing before the crash. Four were killed in the flames, while the other four died after leaping from the balloon as it fell. According to Ulisses Gabriel, chief of Santa Catarina’s civil police force, three of the victims were found embracing each other in their final moments, describing the scene as heartbreaking. “The scene of 3 people dying in each other’s arms hurts my soul,” he wrote on X. Authorities added that the state is in mourning as emergency teams continue rescue and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the tragic crash. Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello announced that he has directed officials in Praia Grande to assist with medical transport, provide support to victims’ families, and coordinate the investigation into what caused the accident.
