The several lots of cough syrup were recalled because they were found to contain Bacillus cereus, a bacteria that can cause food poisoning or even death. Medtech Products Inc voluntarily recalled five lots of Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup on June 17. The recall was issued due to the presence of Bacillus cereus, a dangerous bacteria. The toxin-producing bacteria are commonly found in soil, food, and marine sponges. It can lead to two types of food-borne illnesses, according to a June 18 announcement by the Food and Drug Administration. Nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps may be experienced one to six hours after eating or drinking contaminated food by some. The second type of food poisoning results in stomach cramps and diarrhea that can begin eight to 16 hours after consumption of the contaminated food. "Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term illness, exposure to high levels of foodborne B. cereus can cause death," warns the announcement. Thus far, no serious health complications from the Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup have been reported.
