Elon Musk’s Tesla rolls out first robotaxi fleet in Austin trial![]() “The @Tesla_AI robotaxi launch begins in Austin this afternoon with customers paying a $4.20 flat fee!” Musk posted on X. The pricing—$4.20 per ride—is clearly a nod to the tech billionaire’s well-known internet persona. The new robotaxi service uses a small fleet of 10 to 20 Model Y SUVs. These vehicles drive on public roads within a geofenced area in South Austin. Riders can book their trips using a special app. In concept, it’s a taxi without a human driver. Social media lit up with videos of the cars in action. Enthusiasts and fans posted footage of their first rides. Musk followed up his announcement with praise for the teams that made it happen. A careful start for a big idea Despite the hype, the launch is cautious and far from full autonomy. Only a select group of people, mostly influencers and Tesla fans, received access to the first rides. Each vehicle has a “safety monitor” in the front seat, there to take control if needed. That precaution differs from earlier claims of full autonomy.
