China planning drone with robotic arm for Mars sample hunt, eyeing bio-safety

Drone with robotic arm

On June 24, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a helicopter drone will be key in working with the lander and drill.

The lander will use a robotic arm to scoop up material on the surface. But it won’t stop there. A powerful drill will extract samples from up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) underground, tapping into areas potentially sheltered from harsh surface radiation.

Now, for the star of the show: the uncrewed helicopter drone.

Equipped with its robotic arm and claw, the drone will fly over 100 meters from the lander to retrieve larger, scientifically valuable rocks that could harbor biosignatures. It will then ferry these precious specimens back to the lander for the return home.

While experts haven’t definitively found life beyond Earth, it could be very different from Earth life if it does exist.

Mars’ geological features strongly suggest it once had abundant surface liquid water, a key ingredient for life as we know it.
