Trump is pushing negotiations to end Russia's invasion but has put Ukraine in a difficult spot.

The way the US has given Ukraine aid has also weakened its hand in the past.

Aid has often come after long delays when it's less useful and in small numbers with restrictions.

Ukraine is being pulled into end-of-the-war negotiations by the US under far-from-ideal circumstances.

While the war-torn country likely would not have held onto as much of its territory as it has without the international partners who have given billions of dollars in aid and security assistance, the same partners have often put it in a tough spot, be it on the battlefield or at the negotiating table.

That's very visible right now.

As Ukraine grapples with a challenging battlefield situation, such as losses in Kursk and the continued Russian pressure on front-line positions, the Trump administration has been making things much more difficult and weakening Ukraine's leverage to negotiate.

The Trump administration cut off US support during its cease-fire talks with Ukraine and bullied it into signing a minerals deal.

And prior to that, US officials made big concessions on territory and NATO membership for Ukraine before negotiations even started. Washington has also sidelined Kyiv in the peace process, as well as other important European partners
