Southwest flight 'mistakenly nearly takes off from airport taxiway' in Florida Southwest Airlines Officials said the plane began a takeoff roll on a taxiway, after the crew “mistook the surface for the nearby runway,” before air traffic controllers A Southwest Airlines flight had a near miss at a Florida airport after it almost took off from a taxiway rather than a runway. Southwest Flight 3278 which was en route to Albany, New York, on Thursday morning had been cleared for takeoff at Orlando International Airport. Officials said the plane began a takeoff roll on a taxiway, after the crew “mistook the surface for the nearby runway,” before air traffic controllers canceled the clearance and stopped the aircraft. No injuries were reported, and passengers were put on another plane heading to Albany, the airline said. Southwest is working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
