Solid-state battery breakthrough could boost production by 25 times The company stated that this development is a key part of its plan to enable gigawatt-hour scale manufacturing of its solid-state lithium-metal battery cells. The Cobra process is now the baseline for production on the company’s QS-0 assembly line. Utilizing ceramic separator At the core of QuantumScape’s battery is a proprietary ceramic separator material. Manufacturing this component requires a high-temperature thermal process, known as sintering, to form a dense, uniform layer. This step has historically been a time-consuming and energy-intensive part of the production cycle for ceramic-based solid-state batteries. A lengthy heat treatment can create a bottleneck in a high-volume manufacturing environment and increase overall production costs. The Cobra process directly addresses this challenge. It is the successor to QuantumScape’s “Raptor” system, which was itself designed to create a continuous-flow heat treatment for the separator films.
