US President Donald Trump began the process of closing the US Department Of Education with a White House event as he signed an executive order to close it

Sky News was brought to a standstill as they switched over to the White House for some explosive breaking news: US President Donald Trump had just initiated the process of shutting down the US Department Of Education. In a room buzzing with spectators and journalists, Trump made it official by signing an executive order to close the department.

As he reached for the pen, he remarked: "It is very lucky. I signed another document that turned out very good for the country and I said, 'let's use that same pen. I don't know if anybody's superstition, let's use that same pen'."

The move, which Trump had vowed to make during his campaign, aims to "expand educational opportunities" and "empower parents, states, and communities to take control and improve outcomes for all students", a White House spokesperson explained.

There were calls for the teardown of the department as Trump seemingly tried to circumvent need to
