Science 'nerd' ordered radioactive plutonium to parent's house sparking terrifying hazmat raid

A "science nerd" could face a decade behind bars for ordering radioactive material online because he wanted to collect all the elements of the periodic table.

Emmanuel Steven Lidden, 24, was arrested during a dramatic raid on his parent's suburban home in Sydney, Australia in August 2023. Australian Border Force (ABF) officials, firefighters, police and paramedics rushed to the scene and the street was closed off while neighbors were evacuated as officers dressed in full hazmat suits swooped in on the property.

Authorities confiscated plutonium and depleted uranium contained in decorative vials and polymer cubes that Lidden kept by his bedside. He'd purchased them from a US science collectibles website and had them mailed to his parent's home.

Lidden has pleaded guilty to offenses under Australia’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act, which carry a possible 10-year jail sentence. He is due to be sentenced on April 11.

Lidden’s lawyer John Sutton said the anti-terror laws weren't aimed at someone like Lidden, who he described as an “innocent collector” and “science nerd”. “He did not import or possess these items with any sinister intent … these were offenses committed out of pure naivety,” Sutton told Sydney’s Downing Centre district court on Friday.
