Pope Leo condemns Trump's bombing in Iran, warns of 'irreparable abyss'

Pope Leo XIV warned of an "irreparable abyss" as US forces continue to bomb Iran after President Donald Trump made the decision to attack the Middle Eastern nation's key nuclear sites

Pope Leo XIV has passionately called for peace in his Sunday Angelus prayer at St. Peter's Square, urging for global diplomatic efforts.

On Saturday June 21, Trump gave the green light for U.S. forces to launch strikes on Iran's key nuclear sites, in sync with an Israeli offensive. This move marks a serious uptick in Middle East tensions, with Iran vowing to defend its turf.

"Every member of the international community has a moral responsibility: to stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable abyss," Pope Leo declared during his weekly address to the faithful in the Piazza San Pietro.

After recognising the dire circumstances, the first American pope stressed that "now, more than ever, humanity calls out for peace, a plea that requires rational attention and should not be silenced.

"No armed victory can compensate for the pain of mothers, the fear of children, the stolen future. Let diplomacy silence the weapons, let nations chart their future with peace efforts, not with violence and bloody conflict."
