London Heathrow Airport fire LIVE: Stunning apology issued as first flights take off

Flights have started taking off and landing at London's Heathrow Airport this evening after the UK’s busiest transport hub was forced to close following a devastating fire at a substation.

The blaze at the facility in Hayes led to an “unprecedented” loss of power, impacting travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers and causing chaos worldwide. Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye has since apologised, explaining how a backup transformer failed meaning systems had to be closed down in accordance with safety procedures.

Police have since confirmed the fire “is believed to be non-suspicious”, according to a new statement from the London Fire Brigade. A spokesperson said: “The MPS has confirmed that the fire is believed to be non-suspicious. LFB’s investigation will now focus on the electrical distribution equipment.”
