Donald Trump announces new $20BN fighter jet in warning to China - and embarrassingly names it after himself

Donald Trump has announced that the Pentagon will award a $20 billion contract to Boeing to develop the military’s next high-tech fighter jet, which has been named after the US President.

Trump made the announcement at the White House on Friday, saying the plane has been dubbed the "F-47" after himself - the 47th president.

“The generals picked a title and, it’s a beautiful number,” Trump said.

He said the jet "massively overpowers the capabilities of every other nation." It's expected to help the army counter adversaries including China, which has significantly boosted its defense capability in recent years.

Trump added that the jet would include "state of the art stealth technology" and have "unprecedented power."

"America’s enemies will never see it coming…and if it happens they’ll never know what hit them," he said.

The Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program will include a crewed aircraft built to enter combat alongside drones.

The announcement comes as Trump has been working to slash federal spending. On Thursday he signed an executive order seeking to dismantle the Department of Education.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Musk at the Pentagon on Friday to discuss “innovation, efficiencies and smarter production.”
