China makes first advanced cryomodule for nuclear research facility Fusion cooling innovation The research team successfully designed a high-performance double-spoke superconducting cavity through careful improvements in its electromagnetic and mechanical properties. According to a statement issued by the team, three key goals were achieved: reducing the peak electric field during normal operation, preventing a common problem known as multipacting (which can interfere with performance), and making the cavity easier to manufacture. To complement these enhancements, the team created a unique chemical polishing technique designed for the intricate geometry of the hollow. The cavity can function more effectively with fewer energy losses thanks to this system’s even acid etching, which helps produce high-quality factors (Q-values greater than 3.4×10¹⁰ at an acceleration gradient of 9 MV/m). The testing experts are conducting a horizontal test together with some members of the project team. A high-performance cryomodule was created to house and cool the cavity. The chamber within the cryostat is suspended by the cryomodule using carbon fiber tie rods. These rods reduce heat loss and facilitate cavity position adjustment in a cold environment to ensure stable performance. A novel cooling process for the superconducting cavity was also developed. Experiments revealed that the rate of cooling significantly impacts the cavity’s performance.
