Can Trump Lie His Way out of Economic Disaster? We’re Already Finding Out. In the early, early hours of Tuesday, as President Donald Trump posted all-caps screeds on Truth Social begging for Israel and Iran to cease fire, he took a brief moment to refocus his ire on another frequent target: Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whom he had first appointed back in 2017. “ ‘Too Late’ Jerome Powell, of the Fed, will be in Congress today in order to explain, among other things, why he is refusing to lower the Rate,” wrote Trump, referring to the central bank’s insistence on keeping high interest rates at their elevated levels. “No inflation, great economy – We should be at least two to three points lower.” Neither of those supposed justifications held water. Inflation continues to cool off, but price increases have persisted at a rate that exceeds Powell’s preferred threshold; the U.S. economy shrank slightly during the first three months of the year, and trade nervousness continues to pummel job growth in major economic hubs like Los Angeles and New York City. Powell echoed such bearishness in his congressional testimony Tuesday, telling lawmakers that the continued fallout from Trump’s tariffs and flip-flopping will likely have adverse effects on inflation. He additionally noted that Trump’s sweeping, aggressive immigrant crackdowns is “one of the reasons” for why economic growth looks sluggish
