‘Absolutely Foreseeable’: Dead Boeing Whistleblower’s Family Reportedly Sues Company

The family of a former Boeing quality manager-turned-whistleblower whose death was ruled a suicide filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the airplane manufacturer Wednesday, according to reports.

Whistleblower John “Mitch” Barnett’s mother, Vicky Stokes, and his brothers Rodney and Michael filed the 146-page federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina on his estate’s behalf, the BBC reported.

Police discovered Barnett, 62, dead from what they said was a gunshot wound in a Charleston, South Carolina hotel parking lot March 9, 2024. The incident occurred during an ongoing deposition connected to his lawsuit against Boeing alleging wrongful termination, ABC 4 reported.

Barnett, who had worked for Boeing for 32 years until 2017 when he retired, had suffered “what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Charleston County Coroner’s Office said at the time. (RELATED: Boeing Whistleblower Dies From Sudden Illness: REPORT)

Barnett’s death came amid a welter of mishaps involving Boeing aircraft — most notoriously the midair door plug blowout on an Alaska Airlines-operated Boeing 737 MAX-9 passenger jet Jan. 5, 2024. The Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily grounded 171 of the aircraft globally and the Biden administration’s Justice Department launched a criminal investigation.
